Inventory of Activity in New Mexico Involving Engineers, Mathematicians and Scientists
in K-12 Science Teaching

This page is updated frequently.

There are other activities ongoing in New Mexico with goals very similar to the Santa Fe Alliance for Science. Most, if not all of them, have been in existence for several years -- significantly longer than the Alliance. There have been (see below for more detail) significant successes.

There is now a state-wide initiative forming in New Mexico to link these organizations together. The idea is to begin creating a state-wide resource of engineers, mathematicians, and scientists that could bring significant added value to K-14 math and science education in our state. More details about current thinking can be found in this draft plan (10/10/07 version).

A main purpose of this webpage is to serve as an inventory of existing "engineers, mathematicians, and scientists in the classroom" (EMSC) activities. As more are created (or discovered already to exist), they will be added below.

Eventually we want to create also a "registration center" where schools and EMSC folks can find each other, establish links and working relationships, and exchange information.

According to SchoolTree.org, there are currently 856 public and 205 private schools in New Mexico (1061 total). Of these, 604 are elementary schools, 166 are middle schools, and 180 are high schools (the numbers do not sum to 1061). More information about school districts and individual schools can be found at these websites:

Our goal is to provide a Science Advisor (SciAd) to every school (K-14) in New Mexico who wishes to have one. Exactly how this will be done is yet to be worked out. It will be a complex process given New Mexico's size, diversity, and widely distributed population centers of widely varying size. The design process is just beginning.
