Earlier Science Fair Activities
Over the last four academic years (2007-8, 2008-9, 2009-10, 2010-11) SFAFS volunteers participated heavily in the preparation and judging of local elementary school science fairs. This included a considerable amount of pre-fair consultation with students, helping them pick doable, inexpensive, safe science projects (the principal criteria for a student science project are that it ask a question that can be answered using the scientific method, and that some data be collected and interpreted in the process).
- In 2007-8, SFAFS judged 18 fair days (16 SFPS,1 outside, plus the first-ever District-wide science Expo). Seventeen volunteers contributed ~360 hours judging ~940 projects, almost all from SFPS schools.
- In 2008-9, SFAFS judged 21 fair days (14 SFPS, District Expo, 6 outside). Twenty-two volunteers contributed ~460 hours judging ~1330 projects (~1100 SFPS), qnd work at two schools to do pre-fair coaching with students on their projects.
- In 2009-10, SFAFS judged 17 fair days (14 SFPS, District Expo, 2 outside). Twenty-seven volunteers contributed ~520 hours judging ~1440 projects (~1350 SFPS), and work at two schools to do pre-fair coaching with students on their projects.
- In 2010-11, SFAFS judged 22 fair days (18 SFPS, District Expo, 3 outside). Thirty-two volunteers contributed over 800 hours judging ~1930 projects (~1680 SFPS), and work at four schools to do pre-fair coaching with students on their projects.
